Mikveh Yisrael is a description of the reported discovery of the Lost Ten Tribes in South America written in 1650 in Spanish (under the title Esperanca de Israel, and known in English as Hope of Israel) and addressed to the English parliament in an effort to solicit their goodwill towards the Jews being able to return to England, by Rabeinu Menashe Ben Yisrael. This work aroused much interest in England, several replies being written, especially with regard to the identity of the North-American Indians with the Lost Ten Tribes. This is a Hebrew translation of the original Spanish, by Rav Elyakim Ben Yakov Shatz from Amsterdam.

Sefer HaRaal uPri Genusar is a triple commentary on Masechta Bikkurim from Talmud Yerushalmi by Rabbi Abraham Eliezer Alperstein of Congregation Ohavei Shalom Mariapoler in Chicago and is the first printing of a section of the Talmud in America. Rabbi Alperstein was one of the founders of the Agudas HaRabbonim of America and has the distinction of being the first Rosh Yeshiva of Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of the Yeshiva University. This is an extremely rare sefer as only a few copies are available in all of the United States libraries.

This is an English translation of the sefer, Sivuv Rabeinu Pesachia MiRegensburg (#5 on our site), by Dr. A. Benisch. This edition includes extemsive notes, as well as the original Hebrew text. This is the only English translation of this sefer and it is the only edition of it, published in London, in 1856.

Musar Haskel is a didactic ethical poem, by one of our great Gaonim, Rabeinu Hai Gaon, although there is some doubt if he is the author of this poem. Musar Haskel consists of 189 double verses in the Arabic meter "rajaz," and sometimes is refered to by the title of "Arjuzah." Every strophe is complete in itself, and independent of the preceding strophe. Shir HaKearah, otherwise known as Kearas Kesef, is a similar type of ethical poem by one of the great Rishonim, Rabeinu Yosef HaEzovi. The name of the poem is derived from its 130 verses which equals the number of 130 shekels, the weight of the silver plates brought by the nesiim of the tribes to the Mishkon. This edition includes a letter that Rabeinu Yosef HaEzovi wrote to his son regarding this poem.

This sefer is a compilation of poems and letters by one of our great Rishonim, Rabeinu Avraham Ibn Ezra, the author of the famous commentary to Chumash. This edition in two volumes that are bound into one, by David Kahana, comes with extensive notes, introductions to various parts and a biography of Ibn Ezra. It's worthy to note that in the second volume (p. 90) appears the famous Iggeres HaShabbos in which the Ibn Ezra proves that Shabbos begins starting with sunset on Friday night and not with sunrise on Shabos morning. He wrote it as a refutation to a sect of Jews who lived on Cyprus during his time and kept Shabbos for only 12 hours starting in the morning, as brought down in the beginning of Masaos Rabeinu Binyomin MiTudela (#6).

Gevuras Anashim is a commentary on chapter 154 of the Shulchan Aruch, Even HaEzer, that discusses the laws of impotence, written by one of our great Acharonim, Rabeinu Shabsai HaCohen, known as the Shach. This is the 2nd edition of this sefer and it also contains 10 responsa by the Shach's father, Rabeinu Meir HaCohen, on the same subject.

Sefer Eretz Yisrael, by the great Gaon Rav Yechiel Michal Tucatzinsky, is a halachic work in two parts. The first part discusses the laws and customs, boundaries and relationship of the Jewish people with Eretz Yisrael. The second part discusses the laws of mitzvos that apply only in Eretz Yisrael.

Sefer Tachkemoni is a major work by one of our great Rishonim, Rabeinu Yehuda Alcharizi, famous for his translation of the Rambam's Moreh Nevuchim, which is an all encompassing story written in partial prose and partial poetry. It describes Jewish culture of the period and the scholars and leaders of the communities visited by the author such as, Toledo, Thebes, and Jerusalem. It contains a debate between a Rabbinic Jew and a Karaite, evaluations of earlier and contemporary poets, fables, proverbs, riddles, and satirical sketches, such as the descriptions of a flea and a defense by a rooster about to be slaughtered. This edition, by Dr. Kaminka comes with an extensive introduction, a biography of the author, notes and text variants from diferent manuscripts.

Zecher Rav by Rav Benyamin Mussafia from Amsterdam, who is mostly known for his commentary on the Aruch, is a poetic compilation in which he recounts the history of the creation in such a way that all the Hebrew roots of the Chumash and most of their derivatives occur but once. He wrote it as a dedication to his wife, Sarah, who passed away only six years after they got married. This edition contains German translation of all difficult words and also a second section called Mosdos HaLashon written by R' Yehuda Paradistal in which he discusses the basics of Hebrew grammar. The first edition of this sefer was printed in Amsterdam and is available on our site (#71).

Sefer Ir HaKodesh veHaMikdash, by the great Gaon Rav Yechiel Michal Tucatzinsky, is a halachic work in five volumes that discusses the laws of Yerushalayim and Beis HaMikdash. The sefer contains many maps and charts that outline the boundaries of Yerushalayim, Har HaBayis (The Temple Mount) and the Beis HaMikdash itself. It also discusses many customs that are specific to Yerushalayim and variations of many halachos that apply specifically to Yerushalyim, as well as the history of the holy city. At the end of the 5th volume there is a small addition to the Ir HaKodesh veHaMikdash, that contains additional notes, maps and photographs, called HaAretz Ligvuloseha, written by Rav Tucatzinsky's son, R' Nisan Aharon Tucatzinsky. This is the first edition of this sefer.

The third poem is a very funny dialog, called A Quarrel Between Shabbos and Chanuka, in which Shabbos and Chanuka argue in front of Hashem which one is more improtant. This edition comes with introduction and notes by Prof. David Kahana.

Essays on the Writings of Abraham Ibn Ezra is an excellent work in English by Prof. Michael Friedlaender, the famous principal of the Jew's College in London. In it Prof. Friedlaender analyzes various works of Rabeinu Avraham Ibn Ezra and compares them to the works of other Rishonim. This first and only edition contains an appendix with excerpts from Ibn Ezra's commentary on the Tanach, in Hebrew, with Friedlaender's notes and text variants.
